If it’s a side project/weekend car that you don’t depend on for financial livelihood — still not a fantastic idea.

No computers? It doesn’t look carbureted to me.

I would not day “dumb.” I would also not say “clever.” A “curiosity,” for sure. If you have $4-5k available for disposable income and you like the car, by all means, give it a shot! I mean, for all my blather here, if you have the scratch, buy it. I'd ask you to take me for a ride if you weren't half a continent away.

Absolutely not dumb at all. The Typ 89 80/90 are super durable and very rust proof. Also, the 1.9 TDI is a legendary engine in a very positive way

I think somehow many people equate OBD-1 cars with no computers. Not sure how that logic works but whatever lol.

No disposable income. It would become the primary and only vehicle :P

That is certainly a lovely Passat.
Buy it!
A lot of people will say not to buy a VAG product from the 90s as they’re crazy unreliable and not that great to begin with. However, my 96 Golf, despite what I’ve posted here, has been reasonably reliable and easy to work on, and my 97 Jetta is proving to be extremely easy to resurrect.

I still wouldn’t say “dumb,” but I’d definitely encourage you to keep shopping.
